MAGE Committees

Advocacy and Legislation Committee

The Advocacy and Legislation Committee advises on local, state, and federal advocacy. At the local level, the advocacy committee provides information on gifted and talented programs in Massachusetts, and answers members’ or prospects’ questions about advocating for their children. At the state and federal level, this committee identifies key legislative issues and outlines channels for influencing legislation.

Awards Committee

The Awards Committee recommends which awards will be promoted or overseen by MAGE. They work with the Marketing and Communications Committee to ensure that awards are appropriately publicized. This committee acts as a judging panel on all applications of awards. This committee represents MAGE publicly when giving awards. Past awards given or recognized include the Nicholas Green Award, the Johns Hopkins Scholar Search, and recognition of service to the gifted and talented community.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee advises the MAGE board on membership classifications and dues. Moreover, it will advise on affiliation with institutions, profit and non-profit educational institutions and organizations, and parental support groups. In 2002, this committee will evaluate the creation of local chapters and recommend an initial structure for charter chapters and affiliates of MAGE.

Marketing and Communications Committee

The Marketing and Communications Committee advises on MAGE’s public persona. It identifies potential channels for promoting MAGE, and creates content for those channels. In 2002, members of this committee will be creating a brand new website, publishing a membership newsletter, promoting the use of electronic lists, and increasing MAGE’s visibility.

Programming Committee

The Programming Committee recommends programs for MAGE to offer or support. Examples include conferences, accredited and non-accredited teacher programs, and curriculum institutes. This committee also identifies and supports external programs valuable for the MAGE constituency. In the past, such programs have included the Mass. Future Problem Solving Program, Odyssey of the Mind, College Gate, and College Academy.

Conference Planning Committee

This committee plans the New England Conference on Gifted Education. As we are offering such a conference in October 2008, this committee is now quite active. It is responsible for all the elements of planning, budgeting, advertising, and orchestrating the Massachusetts conference.
